CAPPADOCIA

TIMELINE

Mustafapasa (Sinassos) Village

In Mustafapaşa, the Old Greek House, now a popular restaurant, stands out among stone houses, showcasing secular murals typical of Ürgüp and Mustafapaşa. The Church of Sts Helena and Constantine, dating back to the 19th century, is adorned with a grapevine carving at its entrance and occasionally hosts concerts. Cappadocia's famed rock-cut churches include the Church of St Basil in Mustafapaşa, still in use until the 19th century. The Monastery of St Nicholas, restored in 2012, holds modern icons from Greece and features a grand entrance built post-1856. Nearby Gomeda Valley boasts the early 10th-century Church of the Holy Apostles with frescoes.

Cemil Koy Ancient Village

The village of Cemil, formerly known as Zalela (Calela) in Old Greek, is located 15 km from Ürgüp District in Nevşehir Province. It is one of the historically rich villages of Ürgüp. The village dates back 700 years. Before 1924, 60% of the village's population consisted of Greeks. In 1924, due to the exchange of Muslims living in Greece with Greeks, the Greeks left the village, and 40 households of migrants from the Balkans settled in the village.

In addition to historical churches like the Cemil Village Church and the Greek Church, the texture of the village also carries traces of the past.

Keslik Monastery

Keşlik Monastery is located approximately 17 kilometers from Ürgüp. It houses two churches, a silk farming place, a winery, a kitchen, a dining hall, a school, a meeting room, a holy water source, and residences for monks and priests. The monastery can accommodate up to 200 individuals and is a must-visit mystical site during your Cappadocia journey. One of its churches is dedicated to Archangel Michael, while the other honors Saint Stephen. The Archangel Michael Church, also known as the Black Church, features various depictions. Construction of Keşlik Monastery began in the 3rd century during the spread of Christianity in the Roman Empire. Monks carved rocks to create a tranquil place for worship, forming this structure.

Taskinpasa & Sahinefendi Village

Exploring the Taskinpasa Complex, a Seljuk masterpiece originally designed as a library, takes you on a journey through the rugged terrain of tuff-laden slopes carved by ancient supervolcanoes. Traversing tranquil countryside paths, you'll catch glimpses of Sahinefendi village in the distance, encounter a historic church narrating the steadfastness of 40 Christian soldiers who stood firm in their faith despite pagan pressures, meander through fields, and ultimately arrive at the ancient Roman city of Sobesos.

Soganli Valley

The Soğanlı valleys in southern Cappadocia, 36 km (22 miles) south of Mustafapaşa, are less crowded and offer hiking trails, ancient churches, and unique dovecotes.

Soğanlı is a traditional Turkish village where life has remained largely unchanged for centuries, despite some tourism influence.

You can explore various valleys at your own pace, away from the usual tourist routes.

Highlights include the Tokalı Kilise (Buckle Church) and the Gök Kilise (Sky-Blue Church), each with unique features and history.

Expect to spend at least 90 minutes in Soğanlı, enjoying the scenic walks and historical sites. Don't forget water and snacks, although restaurants are available for refreshments.
